Bridges

Some thoughts on bridging island sims...

Yeah, it's only been a day, and I'm thinking about the challenge of bridging sims that surround themselves with water.

The challenge on the table is to propose to the neighboring sim owners a method of bridging Daphne Abertnathy of Edloe with Tamra Kirshner of Nowhereville in a manner that does not disrupt water traffic.

Here's the neighborhood:

Here's the happy couple, separated by water and a seam-line:

How do we do this?

Well, in RL, we'd build a bridge:

The problem with this idea is that prim-bridges fail when they're not over land. The sim-bounce will toss the avatar into the water.

What about a land bridge?

Water traffic is blocked. The Goddess becomes enraged and destroys us all under her Size Zero heel.

Hrm... what about a combination of the two?

One island extends a peninsula out and the other island sticks up a nubbin of land to match up with it. Then, the other island links that nubbin of land to their main island shore with a prim-bridge.

Hrm... might just work. And if you want to get funky with it...

There's many examples in the RL of small "helper" islands in the middle of a bay or a river that engineers have used as mid-points for bridging to landmasses.

The "helper" island concept is cool, but there's the risk of sim-bounce with that thing. So, why not just cut off of the main islands like Bugs Bunny sawing off Florida in the classic cartoon where the bounty on his hide was too low for his pride to handle.

Tamara calls this "The Leper Colony" concept.

Hrm...
"Rotting Off With Daphne And Tamara"
"Going Gangrene With Daphne And Tamara"
"Washing Our Hands Thoroughly After Touching Daphne And Tamara"

Yeah, that'll work.

/me shakes her head and just gives up.

i like the last idea mostly...its like another island :)

Tam, We are NOT lepers!

And here I was planning a Pont Saint-Benezet style bridge to nowhere(ville) with danceballs too, but not under the bridge, because there is a drowning hazard, or being runover by a passing speedboat hazard, or eaten by a shark hazard (Note to self: buy shark)

I got it: Tamara could do the same thing on her side with the 1/2 bridge and we could have just a "Leap of Faith" to get from one bridge to the other and put the shark between them... if you make it you live if you don't... Have you seen many James Bond movies?

How high does a bridge have to be for a passing sailboat to cross? Since we can ignore gravity, do I need to worry about proper supports for said bridge? Since Matzo would fall apart in the water what else can I make it from? Can I get more prim???
