The news that the IRS has ruled that Sheep's CSI Greeters are part-time employees link #1 and link #2 just invited the camel's nose into the virtual tent.
Based on how things went with the outsourcing to India book in the past decade, how long before typist behind that greeter, helper, shopping assistant, escort, or dancer is being connected from somewhere far, far away and far, far cheaper?
Okay, okay - besides Anshe's empire?
(I won't hold my breath for the SLLU's protests over that practice... after all, to them, it's America that's evil, not the dictatorships and petrotheocracies around the world, right?)
Now that the IRS has discovered the joy of SL (Gee, thanks, Giff and Jessica) it should be amusing to see what stupidity ensues when Congressmorons decide that's a way to dodge the relevant issues of the day during an election season.
As for the venue that asked for a performer to play for 1000L that caused the tempest-in-a-toilet over venue operators and live music in SL, well, I guess now they'd end up trying to pay below minimum wage for what I consider to be one of the highest-skillsets of labor within SL next to advanced scripting.

This is one of the things that I've looked at with scripting in SL a lot. I would hire people, but I wouldn't feel rite paying someone a few thousand lindens for their work since it would work out to below minimum wage.
With that said, the economy of the L$ could very well move out of SL and have people being paid real money through services such as PayPal as more people start to work for "real" money. The Lindens may need to think about this. The reason is that if people are paid through lindens, then the Lindens make a 3% cut on any sale of L$. If transactions go through 3rd party services, the Lindens don't make any money from that.
What they could do is offer a currency that maps to the virtual L$ depending on what country you are from and allow payments directly to people. Say I am in USA and need to pay someone two hundred pounds in GBT. So I could pull up the persons profile in SL and be presented with the normal payment buttons, with an additional [More>>>] button to expand. Then I could say that I want to pay this person 200 in one field and choose a drop-down of pounds in another field. It displays a calculated field of how much L$ that is worth. Then if I don't have enough L$, it tells me how much I would need (as usual) to buy through the store.
One additional drop-down is needed though. The reason for payment. Everything is logged as "gift", but people don't often gift money. It's usually for services, tips, products, etc. If this is available, the Lindens could offer the ability to generate reports based on type of payments so you can file 1099-MISC forms easier .
Ah well. It's all a pipe dream. Lindens don't listen to the peoples ideas any more. There are too many people making suggestions to a deaf ear.

Damn there goes my cheep U.S labor....
This below min wage issue could be really tricky, Its a game right? or not...
As a singer I belong to a union in RL, but really most people will play a gig for whatever they can get, its a case of well you don't take the employer to the union to complain they are offering below min wage, cause you'll never work there again..Musicians arn't usually permanently employed only in rare circumstances...Its hard enough as it is without getting the union involved and closing down the few places to play, and thats what would happen here...
Look I pay tax and claim my SL earnings on tax, but if I had to pay award wages I couldn't even start this buisness as the RL world has not entered SL enough to even support what most of us are doing..
what a minefield..
Lets hope it just goes away....
