There's a JIRA issue started by Vint Falken regarding the prohibition of child avatar culture from the 5th anniversary celebration of Second Life:
The following communities are said to be missing from what was described as: 'Celebrating the cultural diversity of Second Life': 'Who do you hang around with in Second Life? What are your communities' traditions and signature characteristics? Are you proud of your sexy blue fur? Your excruciatingly detailed tea ceremony? Your murky environments? Your sculptures? The help you've given to others?'Child Avatars community will be missing from SL5B (secondchilds.blogspot.com)
Gor and BDSM communities are rumoured to be not welcome either. (Massively)Strangely enough, documentation on ageplay as found on the secondlife official blog dated november 13 2007 stated: 'Please note it does not violate this policy merely to have a child-like avatar. It is not our intent to banish child-like avatars in and of themselves.'
Furthermore, the Community Standards-documentation states that Intolerance is not allowed: 'Combating intolerance is a cornerstone of Second Life's Community Standards. Actions that marginalize, belittle, or defame individuals or groups inhibit the satisfying exchange of ideas and diminish the Second Life community as whole'.
Please fix! In stead of hiding them from the world, give the Child Avatars a chance to prove for the entire world that there is nothing wrong with their community!
No, I'm not into that whole children avatars thing. It's kinda... weird. And creepy.
I don't find it cute at all. I recognize the therapeutic potential, sure, but I don't feel like being a part of the free-range therapy session.
In fact, I tend to hand out cigarettes to them when I see them. Or they get a mouthful of MUTE!
Know what? I'm not a fan of pregnancy attachments, either. Or Goreans. Or BDSM. Or foot-long high heels that make feet look like tongues-with-toes. Or huge buildings that have absolutely nothing in them. Or groups that spew out dozens of notices an hour, dominating the upper right corner of my screen.
So, I choose not to go there. If a performer I like is at one of the sims that caters to the crowd, I'll either park and listen while working in another window or I'll take the opportunity to go elsewhere to catch a performer in a venue that's my bag.
So, you think this means I'm for this ban by LL for the fifth anniversary event?
Wrong. I'm rather disturbed by it.
What I do recognize is that a lot of the technology and development that's out on the grid was developed for the sex trade, the slave trade, and so on. It's taken a lot of creativity and innovation to twist the prims, textures, and scripts into doing what they needed to happen.
I've said it before and I've said it again: I wouldn't by or participate in anything that Lalinda does, but I know for a fact that she's got a pretty damn creative and brilliant mind running on all cylinders to come up with some of that.
In that respect, the challenge of solving a problem has resulted in some tools available to all.
I call it the "Why fund NASA?" argument. So much technology has resulted from the challenge of space exploration. Heck, so much technology has resulted from military necessity, too.
I guess it also applies to the challenge of coming up with child avatars, Gorean submission enforcement, BDSM activities, sex in SL, etc.
Nothing on the grid made itself. Parthenogenesis is a myth, in SL and RL. It doesn't just make itself. Someone had to make it to let them do something, and then someone repurposed it for something else.
In the end, every subculture in SL has contributed something to the benefit of the overall population. And every culture is being given the opportunity to showcase what they've done, what they will do, and what their vision is for tomorrow.
Without limitation. Without sanitization. Without scrubbing. Without censorship.
Except one.
And I don't think that's right.
Take off the handcuffs, Linden Lab. Remove the blinders. Drop the banlines.
If I'm offended, well, I'll just walk away or teleport out, eh. Or I'll ponder writing or developing something to refute or argue against that which I do not agree with.
But don't make that decision for me, Linden Lab. I may be a robot, but I'm no puppet.

Thank you for mentioning, Crap. On behalf of 'the child' ;) and all other communities and 'races' that are 'next' to be 'politely dismissed' from having a Second Life.

Next it's Nekos, Robots, Martians( well, who needs them?), and gender benders. If I want to see the same bland stuff over and over I could log into There.com.

Now, that couldn't have been said better. I may not get the Goreans, the child-like avatars, the Furries, or those who run around as annoying chicks from The OC, but they all are what make Second Life what it is (well, the social part). I mean, should we start banning the gays then?

I'm all about learning about the various subcultures of sl.. they are ALL extensions of REAL people and how they chose to play in this world and xpress themselves.. Banning "child" avatars is not JUST a slippery slope issue.. its flat out a bad thing!
