I have never liked the spiral stairwell from the venue to the catwalk up to the art gallery.

That's right. More floating steps along a curve.

Yeah, it's more prims. But it's a lot more elegant than a spiral stairway. And you don't get weird collision artifacts when the sim's acting all wiggy.
