Okay, so we've got a bunch of islands, a bunch of events, and it's a pain in the ass to go around and update individual signboards, right?
I mean... I tore mine down a long time ago, still couldn't keep up with the hovertexts, and that Lonely Yak board had stuff from March, right?
Well, let's see... we've got a Google Calendar for making sure we don't stomp on each others events and plan stuff out in advance... hrm
Can you connect a Google Calendar with SL?
Answer: yes.
http://calendarcogs.com/ from Mechanized Life lets you do this. You buy a board or kiosk, then you create an account when them.
Then, you associate that account with a Google Calendar account.
The Google Calendar account passes along a list of calendars that you can connect to the kiosk or board. If you have more than one board or kiosk, you can set different calendars to the objects.
The objects also let you configure how often the flip through the entries, if they display just the current days events, and so on.
You can resize and retexture the boards and kiosks, which means you can get them to match the color or texture theme of your build. (I've been using copper and chrome)
Here's a wooden version at The Lonely Yak I'm playing with:
I even changed the background of one of the text boards to a starfield that I've animated to crawl slowly behind the letters.
Over the next few days, I'm hoping the residents play with the calendar and the kiosks and boards... maybe come up with "I wish it did..." ideas... maybe retexture and alter them to fit in with the various builds. (I may play with delinking a kiosk and stuffing the scripted prim into my lamp posts.)
All in all, the ability to let folks collaborate on a calendar and have it conveniently update in SL... priceless, eh.
Wander around Edloe and Nowhereville and BlaksleeWorld and see if they're helpful... and be sure to come back for those events, eh.
(APRIL 9 2010 - Well, the products was wicked-cool, but I guess we know what the folks in the Yak thought of the board prim-wise. Oh well. Their venue, their resources. And nowadays, I don't do many events needing coordinating.)

Thanks for the great review! If anyone has questions about the Cog products, they can IM me inworld! I'm Ali's Girl Friday handling customer service so she can keep her cute lil nose to the scripting grindstone!
