Art Imitates Second Life

This is by JueL Resistance.

the words are the art

Every item in the Boathouse behind the Clocktree is by someone who has special meaning to me, and every item has a story or two behind it.

Is this art?

Is this snapshot of the robot-in-disguise looking at the art also art?

Is my writing about the snapshot of the robot-in-disguise looking at the art also art?

What the flying fuck is art?

The discussion in the Lenden Endowment for the Arts blog post is getting interesting.

Aside from the usual gang of asskissers, there's some serious artists and performers in there speaking up for their field of art.

There's also a few of the Prim Supremacists in there dismissing music as just one guy with a guitar playing on a stage, or saying that music should be separated out into it's own area.

Um... no. Music's been set aside, blown off, pushed to the back burner, and shat on long enough.

I agree that one guy with a guitar on a boring stage isn't much of a boundary-breaking use of the platform. But then, when Zak Claxton was on stage a month or so ago, it may have appeared he was just a guy on a stage, but he was also playing in RL at a coffee house releasing his album, and SL was displayed up in the coffeehouse. Folks were reacting back and forth... crossover.

Hrm... not always what it seems to be, eh?

Art isn't always a twisted prim with a bunch of particles and textures flowing around it.

Perhaps you are aware of the phrase "The Art of Conversation" ? There's an art to handling the lag in communications, something that Kyle Beltran is an absolute master at.

Performance.

There's also an art to assembling a set to fit the mood of the crowd, which Zak Claxton and Grace McDunnough can do with apparent ease.

Then there's the music performers who also create art and craft music around the art, or art around the music... such as JueL Resistance (this is a work of art that is not a work of art... it was the only bit in her gallery not on sale, and I was surprised by that.)

Then there's Filthy Fluno who paints as a live performer such as Cylindrian Rutabaga performs.

So, to the Prim Supremacists, yeah, it may seem like it's just always a dork on a stage wailing on their glockenspiel or accordion or whatever... but using that to dismiss the power of a Musimmersion or JueL's synesthesia efforts or Aldo or ZeroOne Paz's accompaniments to performances, well, that's just ignorant, arrogant, and pathetic.

To the Tommy Cults of the world, well, yeah every seagull is circling for as much bread as it can grab.

I guess I'm just a retarded seagull, because I should be a hockey goon for literature and writing... even if everything I write in my role of Just A Fucking Snob Scribbler-Artist can fit on a sheet of toilet paper and deserves that particular medium's usual method of disposal as criticism.

I wouldn't hold my breath... if I breathed, that is.

(APRIL 24 2010 - Still nothing out of LEA. I wonder who the FIC of Art will be.)
