Storytelling @ 6PM Tonight

Okay, so I've written a lot of really crappy 100 word stories and they're just sitting on the shelf, gathering dust...

Why not inflict them on you over Voice?

Here's the announcement:

[5:03] Skylar Smythe: "Cynics Cabaret" tonight at 6pm SLT - Hosted by Crap Mariner at Club Noir - Noir Storytelling and Live Mic - Bring your dark edge microfiction to perform and share at this unique bi-weekly event. Don't miss it! Club Noir tonight at 6pm http://slurl.com/secondlife/Royal%20Mountains/142/17/2930

And that's how to write an announcement.

No hype.
No bullshit.
No best-in-the-world crap or ask X for a limo retardedness.

Just quick and stick-to-the-facts.

See you there, folks.

Yeah, just add woodgrain and grey to make it perfectamundo.

"BLACK AND WHITE"
by Jackson Browne

Long before you ever saw your chances
You were gonna burn this city down
Tired of the fashions and the dances
Tired of the people standing around
Ticking like a bomb in the night
And you knew you were right
Black and white
Blame it on the time it took to leave here
Blame it on the ones who slowed you down
Blame it on the kind of friends you knew here
Blame it on the sickness going 'round
Going round and round in the night
With your heart out of sight
With your world burning bright
Like a moth 'round a light
Black and white
The pictures of a life in flames
Black and white
The picture of a life remains
And the search you half remember
Setting out on at the start
Is burning like an ember in your heart
Time running out, time running out
For the fool still asking what his life is about
Time running out, time running out
Time running out, time running out
Yeah, beyond a shadow of a doubt
Time running out, time running out
Tell them that you've gone to find a person
Someone you lost track of long ago
Tell them that it's someone you need worse than
Anybody else you'll ever know
Ticking like a bomb in the night
You were strong, you were light
You were fast, you were bright
Then you were gone in the light
Black and white
The pictures of a life in flames
Black and white
The picture of a life remains
And the high ideals and the promise
You once dressed the future in
Are dancing in the embers with the wind
Time running out, time running out
For the fool still asking what his life is about
Time running out, time running out
Time running out, time running out
Yeah, beyond a shadow of a doubt
Time running out, time running out

And yet, I really want to rip out the diving board and put the airship back there.

Not that I ever used it as my office much. And even if I did use it as an office, what will i use the office level of the Clocktree for after that? Hot tub?

This will make it easier for folks who think that 7PM on Mondays is not Cypress O'Clock.

Yes, Cypress has an O'Clock now.

Being the Official O'Clock Designator of Second Life, having given the term "Grace O'Clock" to the masses before you knew what Grace O'Clock was, I declare Cypress O'Clock.

What other O'Clocks are there?

Well, there's Kyle O'Clock, Paisley O'Clock, and even Effinjay O'Clock.

I'd say there's a Metanomics O'Clock, but you know what? That crap is during the day... screw you people with no lives or jobs that let you play online all day!

Prim cheap...

My prim miserliness continues, with my focus now on the fishing dock in the SE corner of the park.

Yeah, there's that skating ice still there. Hope wanted to keep the skating going for as long as possible, so I haven't pulled it up yet.

When it comes up, I figure I'll be spending 4 or 5 prims on reeds.

However, there's still the matter of those deckchairs, which are 3 prims each.

12 prims for seating a whole lot of nobody, but I don't want to remove it completely. (I don't have any idea what I'd want to put there if I cleared it all, eh.

So, I'm going to pull those up and put in just a pair of sculpty-benches.

Savings of 10 prims.

The steps from the ground to the deck can be turned into sculpties... savings of 2 prims there.

Tried to turn the spiral steps into sculpties, but didn't quite work out.

Oh well. Would have saved a dozen with that. And a lot for Hope, too. (Will keep that on my to-do list.)

Since I never run any tournaments, there's no point to putting out the scoreboard.

Probably no point to the vendor, either, but I'll leave it there for convenience's sake.

(Unless I just want to put out the 1-prim news sign and let that designate the fishing area.)

The junkpile out there, up against the road berm, that's a matter of pride.

Yes, you heard it right... I've always had a junkpile somewhere to remind me of the heady building days.

(I really need to put some ferns and weeds there to fill out the nastiness.)

Two more performers asked to be added to the Tunes inSL site this weekend, so I got them added.

Slowly but surely, the site is filling in and building up.

I think I've asked this a hundred times in the past month, but it bears repeating:

What do you find useful about the site?

What do you find frustrating or useless about the site?

What information on the site is the most helpful?

What information do you need, but it's missing from the site?

No more attaboys and good jobs and well dones... take off the gloves, roll up the sleeves, and let's keep refining this thing.

And if you haven't gotten yourself added to the site, well, just drop me a line at tunesinsl (at) isfullofcrap.com with whatever information you want posted there.

Don't let all those URLs and different sites scare you. Just search for yourself in Google, copy-paste into a notecard, and send it.

You'll look back and laugh at how easy it was... heck, someone who's already done it... it wasn't hard, right? How much time did it take?

Even the robot finds it difficult to get away from.

I used to give these away at random as gifts, but they've raised the price on them from $50 to $90.

The price of stuff is not supposed to go up like that. Competition and innovation means the price of the same stuff is supposed to go down, not up.

I guess I'll be giving away less of them as gifts.

After I saw it in her offices, Ms. Blackburn gifted this to me yesterday.

If you knew the backstory, you'd realize that things have now come full circle. I couldn't stop laughing at the karmic balance.

The Liar's Chair

Snapshots from Tonight Live with Paisley Beebe.

The bagheaded bastard SecondLie bought a chair to support the show.

Just one of the 5kL chairs, nothing fancy.

Maybe I'll try to one-up him with a 10kL or a 20kL chair when I finally get this last card paid off.

Tonight Live has done a lot to get the word and sound out about music on the grid, but in the end, with M's "killer ap" being more like "killer apathy" from the Labbies, nothing that anybody does will amount to much.

Oh well. At least it's good for a tip, ja?

And it lets others know: I give a shit.

Even without the usual iTunes gift certificate blowout, it was a brutal holiday season, and it didn't let up in January.

But I think things are settling down, and I can keep climbing that hill until I reach zero again.

For what? So it can all go to a RL house which will need furniture and cable and repairs and taxes and everything else?

Rusikoff's "Life, Inc." is not telling me anything I didn't already know: the corporations and kings have set the board for the game, and the pieces we are forced to become just keep getting lured along.

Am I one of those gamepieces?

Or am I the robot... who is pretending to be a toy... or is that a toy pretending to be a robot?

Or am I the walking satire of all the Labbie lies and mistakes and policy blunders, shaped like the pop-culture mystery phenomenon who was ultimately revealed... and faded away?

Which am I? All of them? None of them?

If I start again, will I just become myself again?

"HURT"
covered by Johnny Cash

I hurt myself today
to see if I still feel
I focus on the pain
the only thing that's real
the needle tears a hole
the old familiar sting
try to kill it all away
but I remember everything
what have I become?
my sweetest friend
everyone I know
goes away in the end
and you could have it all
my empire of dirt

I will let you down
I will make you hurt

I wear this crown of thorns
upon my liar's chair
full of broken thoughts
I cannot repair
beneath the stains of time
the feelings disappear
you are someone else
I am still right here

what have I become?
my sweetest friend
everyone I know
goes away in the end
and you could have it all

I will let you down
I will make you hurt

if I could start again

When I think of supported of live music on the grid, Blaze Columbia is high on the list.

And when I think of M Linden's statement that music is a killer ap on the grid, I can't help but think that music is getting slowly bled to death and killed by M's apathy.

Spacejunky... sinking.
Menorca... hiatus.

Who next?

2010 was the year for music being reviewed as a use-case for the platform, but since then we've seen nothing on it.

Instead, we've seen him mass-friending on this early-alpha Avatars United toy he purchased and lots of buzz on Viewer 2.0.

We're supposed to be overjoyed that tier prices will stay the same, even though performance hasn't improved much, capacity hasn't increased, and many of the old limits we've deal with are still in place.

(Lotus123 Linden/Mitch Kapor has often said that the Lab's revenues are like a hosting company, so we're all supposed to be glad that we'll paying the same for servers that are continuing to show their age while we're all needing to demand more from them?)

I guess we'll see how much Viewer 2.0 will help... or hurt things more.

It's crap. It's something that makes Google Wave look useful. It's no Facebook-replacement... it's freaking Facebork.

Coins to customize your profile? Bullshit... Plurk lets you do that from the get-go, and Twitter even lets you set a wallpaper.

Portability? I can update Twitter from everywhere.

Blog? I've got my own, thank you. If folks don't want to follow it, fine.

Pictures? Already got Flickr, and the groups and tags and such.

Groups? Yeah, it would be nice to have more than the 25 for announcements, but then, I can follow subscribeomatic feeds via RSS and Twitter and other means. (I'm about to start wiping out the friends list of folks who Friends Conference Spam all the time.)

And where's the Block and Mute functions?

Blech.

I have enough on my plate than to run a maze that's being maintained and upgraded by a team of developers that should be working on the main SL product's flaws.

The time and bug-suffering for this pit of problems to get integrated into SL's website and SL proper are going to be a security and functionality nightmare for everyone. And if XStreet's GOMing and mis-inegration and draconian policy changes are any indicator of what midset will be involved with the integration of this tool, well, maybe me iPad and Kindle and Nook aren't such a crazy idea at all.

I'll go back to what I used to do all the time before SL and social media: reading books, petting cats, and napping on the patio as the sun goes down.

Let me know when it's integrated into the viewer and when I have no choice but to use it or someone's got something there that actually helps and saves time and effort.

Until then, enjoy the endless uniting and spamming orgy in the sloppy, messy heap of tangled code-shit.

Elvis-natured robots?

Okay, so the key that Grace gave me night not work with my usual outfit, so I asked a friend of mine who might find it useful...

He said "Thankyouverymuch" and left the building.

But not before...

*sigh* He can be such an embarrassment.

THEY SAID "EVIL NATURED ROBOTS" NOT "ELVIS-NATURED ROBOTS!"

Ugh.

Prometheus on the rock

I finally got a pillow from Pillow Talk that sits well with the rock in the harbor.

Rezzing one after the other, adjusting position on the rock, sitting on each... it takes time to get things right.

Playing with windlight settings... let's go with darkness... only my eyes, the antenna, and the clock on my hat appear.

I think I need some fireflies in the reeds.

Amazing what you can accomplish using less and less prims. Perhaps when I finally reach 1 prim for everything, there will be so much that I cannot see through the amazement.

This weekend, I was asked why I do all this.

I'm not sure. And when I look back over my transaction history and the credit card statement that's dedicated with SL purchases, the timelogs I keep for what I do with Tunes inSL... it still doesn't quite make sense.

Perhaps I just do what I do because I love doing it, and it doesn't matter what the reaction is or if others take up the standards or the fact that there's never going to be any kind of triumphant payoff.

Just do whatever you do because you love doing it.

Even when things look dark, there's still light somewhere. That's what matters.

"LOVE OVER GOLD"
by Dire Straits

You walk out on the high wire
you're a dancer on thin ice
you pay no heed to the danger
and less to advice
your footsteps are forbidden
but with a knowledge of your sin
you throw your love to all the strangers
and caution to the wind
And you go dancing through doorways
just to see what you will find
leaving nothing to interfere
with the crazy balance of your mind
and when you finally reappear
at the place where you came in
you've thrown your love to all the strangers
and caution to the wind
It takes love over gold
and mind over matter
to do what you do that you must
when the things that you hold
can fall and be shattered
or run through your fingers like dust
